Casas Colgadas
Cuenca, Spain
The ancient city of Cuenca is breathtakingly located between two gorges straddling the Júcar and Huécar rivers in Castile-La Mancha in central Spain. The strategic location is why it was originally founded around 714 AD as an Arab stronghold fortress. But as more and more people started living there over the centuries, the setting demanded a great deal of architectural ingenuity to enable the city’s growth.

Heritage Granary Complex
Grudziądz, Poland
The Heritage Granary Complex in Grudziądz dates back to the fourth century. Preserved as it is, the architectural complex is an example of urban planning that is unique to Poland and to the whole of Europe. Significant damage was caused during the battles that raged for control of the town in 1945. Rebuilding work continued from 1946 to 1966. Some of the buildings continue to this day to function as warehouses, some are lived in, and a couple have been adapted to meet the needs of the Grudziądz Museum.
