A7 highway
Purmerend, The Netherlands
The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS) manages and develops the network of roads and waterways in the Netherlands. Innovation and research are extremely important here. New products and services have to be effective and efficient, they must be long lasting and their negative impact on people and the environment must be minimised. Lighting systems with low CO2 emissions therefore have high priority.RWS wanted to introduce dynamic lighting for the renovated stretches of the A7 between Purmerend and Wognum (North Holland) and the A2 between Maasbracht and Kerensheide (Limburg). By dimming lights, it is possible to save energy without compromising safety. Based on the functional requirements formulated by RWS for the dynamic lighting to be used on the two stretches of road, the contractors, independently of one another, suggested the Philips Starsense telemanagement system. In RWS’s test centre, this system was checked thoroughly to ensure successful communication over the fibre-optic network – from the Starsense dimming system to RWS’s traffic control centre in Velsen-Zuid. The results were most positive.
