The Starsense Powerline family

Starsense is a telemanagement system, with remote control of outdoor light points on highways, roads, streets and in residential areas. Saves energy by enabling individual light points to be switched on or off at any given time or set to any dimming level. Makes outdoor lighting installations intelligent and dynamic, minimizing light pollution and increasing safety.

Features
  • Starsense controls and monitors any lamp type from electromagnetic ballasts to electronic drivers (DALI or 1-10 V)
  • Starsense uses dedicated lamp data files created and tested to accurately detect failures in the light points
  • Starsense uses a user-friendly software tool capable of showing all the relevant information such as failures, energy consumption, lifetime, etc., and even real-time monitoring using web mapping services from the Internet
Applications
  • Designed for highways, roads or street lighting in general, including residential areas
System
  • LLC7030 OLC to control/monitor DALI drivers
  • LLC7035 OLC to control/monitor DALI drivers with meter accuracy
  • LLC7040 OLC to control/monitor 1-10 V drivers
  • LLC7050 OLC to control/monitor step-dim electromagnetic ballasts
  • LFC7065 Segment Controller that connects to a LonWorks® network to monitor, control and manage a group of OLCs

A7 highway
Purmerend, The Netherlands
The Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management (RWS) manages and develops the network of roads and waterways in the Netherlands. Innovation and research are extremely important here. New products and services have to be effective and efficient, they must be long lasting and their negative impact on people and the environment must be minimised. Lighting systems with low CO2 emissions therefore have high priority.RWS wanted to introduce dynamic lighting for the renovated stretches of the A7 between Purmerend and Wognum (North Holland) and the A2 between Maasbracht and Kerensheide (Limburg). By dimming lights, it is possible to save energy without compromising safety. Based on the functional requirements formulated by RWS for the dynamic lighting to be used on the two stretches of road, the contractors, independently of one another, suggested the Philips Starsense telemanagement system. In RWS’s test centre, this system was checked thoroughly to ensure successful communication over the fibre-optic network – from the Starsense dimming system to RWS’s traffic control centre in Velsen-Zuid. The results were most positive.
